My Story

Ever since I was 17 years old, I vividly remember hearing people around me constantly saying how old they were, as if I couldn't possibly understand the feeling yet. Ironically, those people were only 20 years old themselves, still young and inexperienced.

They were right about one thing, though: I didn't understand that feeling. Now, I'm not sure if it was because I wanted to prove them wrong or if I was simply tired of being told that I was too young to comprehend, but to this day, I have never truly felt "old." And I think part of the reason for that is simply because I chose not to.

Back then I was 17. I have recently turned 40, and I'm still as puzzled as I was when I first heard those statements. I've always admired those remarkable individuals who continue to engage in gymnastics, dancing, or hitting the gym well into their 70s and beyond.

Their energy and vitality have always inspired me. Whenever I hear someone say, "I'm so old!" it is usually always followed by a depressing or negative conversation.

Phrases such as:

"I'm too old for this!",

"I'm too old, it's too late for me!",

"I'm too old, nobody would take me seriously!",

"I'm getting old, my memory is failing!",

"I'm too old, it's too late for me to start all over again!",

"I’m too old, I shouldn’t be having this much fun!”,

"I'm too old, I can't stretch like that.",

"I'm too old, my body is falling apart!"

As you can see, these statements are always accompanied by negativity, making us feel worse about ourselves. I've come to realize that using these words is just a way to justify our perceived shortcomings. Words hold tremendous power, more than we often realize. They carry energy, and what we feel when we speak and believe them instantly impacts our lives.

"When we say we're 'too old,' we limit our potential and accept self-imposed boundaries."

When we say we're too old to do something, we are essentially accepting our limitations. But the truth is, we probably can do it; we just don't believe we can or don't know how, using our "old age" as an excuse.

Looking back at my 20-year-old friends who felt "old," I now understand that their age had nothing to do with anything. It was a way for them to avoid pushing themselves further or to justify their unwillingness to make an effort to grow and learn.

They believed they were "too old" to make any changes in their settled lives. It's okay to be content as you are, but feeling old at such a young age wasn't quite right. Often, we hear these statements so frequently that they become a way for us to brush off the fact that we're getting older.

As time passes, we may gain some weight, our hair may turn grey or thin out, our skin may look dull and wrinkly, and even the thought of stretching can be painful.

Now, let's face it, we're all getting older. We're all heading in the same direction, one way or another. We can't avoid it, but there's no need to dwell on the morbid aspects of aging. My point is, while we're still alive, wouldn't it be better to feel great, strong, full of energy, and vibrant, living our best lives?

Where we are right now, what we choose to think and say has a profound impact on our mindset. If we focus on our wrinkles, aches, and pains, we only magnify them. The more we obsess over something, the more we see it. The universe has a way of bringing more of what we focus our minds.

"But what if, instead of accepting decline as an inevitable fact, we took charge of our health and decided how we want to feel?"‌

To this day, I still come across these familiar statements:

"You'll see what it feels like when you get to my age!"

"Your memory will decline."

"Your body is not the same as it used to be."

Of course, I understand that aging is a natural process and our bodies go through various stages and changes throughout our lives. That's a given. But what if, instead of accepting decline as an inevitable fact, we took charge of our health and decided how we want to feel?

Aging doesn't have to mean letting ourselves go and feeling worse as the years pass. What if every day, we made the conscious decision to feel great and believed that we can choose how we want to feel? Because no matter where you are right now or what you're going through, your health should be a top priority.

It's an act of self-love and self-care, similar to putting on your oxygen mask first on a plane before helping others. Without oxygen, you wouldn't last more than a few minutes in an emergency. Just as without health, we are left with nothing.

"It's never too late to become the best version of yourself."

Let's face it, we all wish we felt better, that we woke up bursting with joy, vitality, and energy.
